Since January 2021, I’ve been keeping a list of my writing activity for each month (here’s last month’s). I do so partly as a form of encouragement for myself to show that I am still able to do some writing despite the energy-sucking terrors of our times, and partly as an archive that I can look back on in the future. As such, I include negative happenings (e.g., receiving rejections), not just positive ones.
I think that it is important for me to share my list publicly as a genderqueer bisexual disabled Latinx writer because mainstream discourse tries to either pretend voices such as mine do not exist or actively tries to suppress them. Whether one is part of an oppressed group or not, writing is an essential act of resistance in these terrible times (WHICH ARE ESPECIALLY TERRIBLE IN THE U.S.A. RIGHT NOW–make no mistake, the current “presidential” administration is a fascist one), so I hope that my list offers encouragement to others.
The list is basically in chronological order.
1. Had a poem accepted by Frogpond.
2. Received a 2027 Best of the Net nomination for my haibun “After the Election” that was published in #FemkuMag. (Note that the 2027 awards cover writing published between July 2025-June 2026).
3. Had a poem accepted by Mariposa.
4. Submitted eight poems to #FemkuMag and had three accepted.
5. Submitted twelve poems to Blithe Spirit and had two accepted.
6. Was asked to peer-review (Is that the right term for reviewing a creative writing manuscript? It feels like there’s a different term that’s not coming to mind at the moment.) a book of non-haiku poetry by a press, and turned down the invitation due to lack of time.
7. Was approached about writing a congregational history for a church, and turned down the invitation due to lack of time. It was cool to be asked, though, as this is the kind of project that isn’t in my wheelhouse, and that would be interesting to pursue for that reason.
8. Had two poems and a book review published in the Spring/Summer 2026 issue of Frogpond.
9. Received and copyedited the proofs and cover of my forthcoming poetry collection, Morning Subway.
10. Had a poem accepted by Haiku Canada Review.
11. Had a poem, “Dairy Queen a blizzard of Little Leaguers,” published in Lost and Found: Haiku Society of America Members’ Anthology 2026, edited by Matt Snyder.
